The Clock

The current clock shown above (the second to be installed in the tower) - was built by Gillett and Johnston in 1884 at a cost of £208-10s-0d.
Technically a turret clock, with a double, three legged gravity escapement which strikes the hours, it still runs within its original design specifications of plus or minus two seconds a week!

It has to be hand-wound frequently as the weights provide enough energy for only 3.5 days!

In 2010 the PCC approved the installation of an EPC automatic winding unit. This compact units will upgrade the mechanical clock by eliminating the onerous task of hand winding the weights. The design by the original clockmakers Gillet & Johnsosn ensures that the heritage of the mechanical movement remains intact.
