Church Clean Up - Late May Bank Holiday 09
With cutters, polish, black bags and elbow grease, a task force set to work in the small courtyard garden, terrace and the church. No stone was left unturned - no leaf was safe and bushes plants or weeds all faced the same treatment - prepare to be trimmed or removed! On Sunday afternoon the advance party commenced with the first cut as the Rector, sporting shorts, sunglasses and a hat, started to hack the out of control ivy, whilst others were more delicate in their pruning. No amount of pleading that it might grow again was listened to - if it looked dead it was removed. 50 bags of debris in total were removed, soil was broken up and even an archeological find was made (or so Sharon was led to believe!).
Inside the church all wood was polished, chairs were cleaned, windows washed and a real good old fashioned spring clean took place. The smell of wood polish permeated the building!
A sumptuous lunch was provided for the 20 or so work force and following lunch the children got slightly wet as plants were watered - ooooops!
The helpers ranged from 85 to 5 and from all parts of the community including 5 children some of whom were from the Soho Parish School came and helped and a good day was had by all. In the afternoon even a bottle of gin was found to be among the debris and on finding something that good well, we had to have a break and a little afternoon drink once the sun had gone over the yard arm!
If you missed it - don't worry! There will be other days or, if you would like to volunteer to help out with gardening, contact the Rector!
